In 2021 I worked as an Artist in Residence in Le Maupas France. There were big kilns and that was a nice opportunity to try out different techniques.
Hydra is made of porcelain sludge, and I tried to make it as high as possible. The result was that a part of the object was almost dry while another part still had to be constructed. Due to its enormous size (wet approx. 110x90x90 cm) it threatened to collapse. Thanks to the firing skills of Pieter Kemink, it emerged from the kiln unscathed.
The Hydra represents the Greek serpent-like water monster that was defeated by Hercules with enormous efforts. He succeeded only with the help of Iolaos, who seared the monster’s necks at speed, so that no new heads could grow. The immortal last head was buried in the soil.
In the current junctures, one can think about the immense circumstances under which the climate crisis must be forced. An almost impossible task, but with cooperation and courage it can be done.
