Brooch

At AiR Kunstkollektivet 8B in Denmark, I developed a timeline from 4500 BC until 1500 AD with the focus on women in prehistory and early Middle Ages. The aim was to draw attention to the life of Danish women in the early past. I read books, visited excavations, looked at artifacts and got inspired.

The brooch above is from the Viking era (approx. 1300 AC). Its size is about 3.5 cm. Prominent women wore such precious jewels, and the beastly image served as protection against evil influences.

To show off the wavy patterns, I enlarged the brooch immensely. The brown manganese oxide applied over the blue-green glaze gives an impression about the centuries it was hidden in the ground before it was found.
